Bernd Philipsen is a journalist, having begun working in Baden-Württemberg, then in and around Hamburg and, since 1968, in Flensburg. He was the managing editor of the Schleswig-Holsteinischer Zeitungsverlag (Schleswig-Holstein newspaper publishers) until 2002, and has since worked as a freelance journalist and author. He is the author of numerous publications on contemporary and regional history and the history of the Jews in Schleswig-Holstein. Together with Fred Zimmak, he most recently published “Wir sollten leben – Am 1. Mai 1945 von Kiel mit Weißen Bussen nach Schweden in die Freiheit” (We should live - on May 1, 1945, on the White Busses from Kiel to Sweden and Freedom) in 2020.
